Programme Overview

Unlock your child's writing potential with the Writing to Engage and Excite programme. In this programme, students will master a variety of intermediate literary techniques and devices, transforming them into more sophisticated writers.

Your child should be enrolled in this academic level in 2027.

Programme Focus

The Writing to Engage and Excite programme focuses on honing students' writing skills. By applying the literary techniques and devices taught to their writing, students will not only gain an edge but also develop a greater appreciation for the language.

Course Outline

In the Writing to Engage and Excite programme, students will learn the essential skills to become more advanced and sophisticated writers.

Through the use of vivid and exam-relevant examples, students will better understand how to apply a variety of intermediate literary techniques and devices to their writing. Students will also learn how to think critically, developing the ability to analyse and critique a piece of writing and then improve upon it. In addition, students will be exposed to The Learning Lab's (TLL) unique in-house brainstorming methods, which help writers come up with interesting plots that capture and hold a reader's attention.

By learning how to appropriately apply these skills, students will not only gain an edge but also develop a greater appreciation for the language itself.

Course Highlights

Session 1

Introduction to foreshadowing, twists and introductory phrases.
Focus on how to brainstorm for compositions by using decision trees.

Session 2

Introduction to similes, metaphors and personification.
Focus on perfecting your writing.

Session 3

Focus on writing a composition.
Consolidate your knowledge of literary techniques and devices learnt.

Will there be homework?

Yes, there will be some light writing exercises that students might have to take home to complete. However, ample scaffolding and notes will be provided to help them with the exercises.

How is this different from your Composition Writing Excellence programme?

The Composition Writing Excellence programme is a five-week programme geared to helping students who may struggle with composition writing or just want a longer and more intensive writing programme. This writing programme is only offered in December and is meant to serve as a “stretch” module for our writers who want to learn one or two more advanced techniques to help their writing stand out.

How will this programme help my child with his/her schoolwork / exams?

This is a dedicated writing programme to introduce some of the intermediate literary techniques and devices, such as foreshadowing and plot twists, that your child can use in his/her writing. There are also opportunities for brainstorming different plot ideas as well as editing to hone one's metacognitive skills. All of the above-mentioned skills are useful skills your child would need to excel in his/her writing in the exams.

How is this different from your regular curriculum?

Although this is covered in our regular programme, this programme allows the teacher to dive deep into these intermediate techniques and students are given ample time and opportunity to practise using them.

My child signed up for this programme last year. Can he/she attend again?

No, as the materials will be the same.
