Programme Overview

Unlock your child's writing potential with the Writing to Engage and Excite programme. Students will master a variety of intermediate literary techniques and devices, transforming into more sophisticated writers.

Your child should be enrolled in this academic level in 2026.

Programme Focus

The Writing to Engage and Excite programme focuses on honing students' writing skills. By applying the literary techniques and devices taught to their writing, students will not only gain an edge, but also develop greater appreciation for the language.

Course Outline

In the Writing to Engage and Excite programme, students will learn the essential skills to become more advanced and sophisticated writers.

Through vivid and exam-relevant examples, students will better understand how to apply a variety of intermediate literary techniques and devices to their writing. Students will also learn how to think critically, developing the ability to analyse and critique a piece of writing and then improve upon it. In addition, they will also be introduced to The Learning Lab's unique in-house brainstorming methods, which help writers develop interesting plots that capture and hold a reader's attention.

By learning how to apply these skills appropriately, students will not only gain an edge but also develop a greater appreciation for the language itself.

Course Highlights

Session 1
- Introduction to foreshadowing, twist and introductory phrases
- Focus on how to brainstorm for compositions by using decision trees

Session 2
- Introduction to similes, metaphors and personification
- Focus on perfecting your writing

Session 3
- Focus on writing a composition
- Consolidate your knowledge of literary techniques and devices learnt

Will there be homework?

Yes, there will be some light writing exercises that students might have to take home to complete. However, ample scaffolding and notes will be provided to help them with the exercises.

How is this different from your Composition Writing Excellence programme?

The Composition Writing Excellence programme is a five-week programme geared towards students who may struggle with composition writing or are looking for a more intensive writing programme. Offered only in December, this programme is ideal for writers looking to pick up one or two advanced techniques to help their writing stand out.

How will this programme help my child with their schoolwork or exams?

This is a dedicated writing programme that introduces intermediate literary techniques and devices such as foreshadowing and twist, which your child can apply in their writing. There will also be opportunities to brainstorm plot ideas and complete editing exercises that hone metacognitive skills, all useful skills in exam writing.

How is this different from your core curriculum?

While covered in our core programme, this programme allows the teacher to dive deeper into intermediate techniques and gives students ample time and opportunity to practise.

My child signed up for this programme last year, can they attend again?

As the materials and content will be the same, this programme is intended for first-time participants only.
