Programme Overview

By cultivating a critical appreciation of literary genres and writing techniques, our Creative Writing programme will nurture students' writing talents and help them to develop their own writing style.

Your child should be enrolled in this academic level in 2026.

Programme Focus

The Learning Lab's Creative Writing programme will expose students to creative stories to hone their writing skills and encourage a love for writing. Primary 3 students will learn how to develop compelling characters in their stories as well as write from different points of view. Our Primary 4 students will dive into the exciting world of science fiction and learn how to craft their very own science fiction story.

Designed to teach the fundamentals of good story writing, our programme will equip students with comprehensive knowledge of engaging literary devices that they can apply to their Paper 1 writing examination, while motivating them to explore new genres and refreshing writing techniques.

Course Outline

This programme will help your child learn how to craft compelling stories and develop their own writing style.

Your child will learn to describe people, places and feelings in interesting ways. The course will utilise story extracts to engage your child in class and help him or her to learn better.

While not intended as examination preparation, Creative Writing is designed to teach students the fundamentals of good story writing. This includes having a good plot with a climax, as well as using literary devices to add interest to their stories. Students get to write around their favourite genre, which will help motivate them to write.

Focusing on the science fiction genre, the course will cover the following elements:

Learning about the features of a science fiction story
Analysing extracts from famous science fiction stories
Using one's imagination and creativity to brainstorm creative science fiction ideas
Developing fun and unique characters for a science fiction story
Writing a story using creative writing prompts

Session 1

- What is narrative writing? What are some genres of narrative writing?
- Science-fiction Versus Fantasy
- What is science fiction?
- Exploring setting, characters and plots in science-fiction stories
- Analysing extracts from famous science-fiction stories

Session 2

- Writing your own science-fiction story
- Creating a protagonist using character profiles
- Crafting the setting using five-senses description

Who can join this programme?

For P3 Creative Writing, students who are Primary 3 in 2026 are welcome to join this programme.

For P4 Creative Writing, students who are Primary 4 in 2026 are welcome to join this programme.

How will this programme help my child with his / her school work / exams?

Although it is a creative writing programme, it will also cover in detail the structure of a story as well as cover various literary techniques needed to make a story engaging. These are skills that can be used in composition writing.

How is this different from your core curriculum?

This programme focuses on using creative prompts to help children to write. They are encouraged to think creatively and write stories that they might usually not write for school. We hope that this programme will instil a love for writing in your child.
