Programme Overview
Programme Focus
The Learning Lab's Creative Writing programme will expose students to creative stories to hone their writing skills and encourage a love for writing. Primary 3 students will learn how to develop compelling characters in their stories as well as write from different points of view. Our Primary 4 students will dive into the exciting world of science fiction and learn how to craft their very own science fiction story.
Designed to teach the fundamentals of good story writing, our programme will equip students with comprehensive knowledge of engaging literary devices that they can apply to their Paper 1 writing examination, while motivating them to explore new genres and refreshing writing techniques.
Course Outline
This programme will teach students to craft compelling stories and develop their own writing style.
Students will learn to describe people, places and feelings in interesting ways. The course will utilise images and writing prompts to engage students in class and help get their creative juices flowing.
While not intended as examination preparation, Creative Writing is designed to teach students the fundamentals of good story writing. This includes having a good plot with a climax, as well as using literary devices, to add interest to their stories. Students get to write short stories based on their favourite genres, which will help motivate them to write.
To introduce students to the fundamentals of creative writing, the course will cover the following elements:
- Brainstorming creative plot ideas
- Developing fun and interesting characters
- Exploring one's imagination and creative expression
- Analysing extracts from children's stories
- Writing a story using creative writing prompts
- Using different points of view, literary devices and appropriate parts of speech to enhance their writing
