Programme Overview

For Ages 10 to 12

It’s never too early to build foundations.

As the Fourth Industrial Revolution is approaching, coding skills are more essential than ever in giving your children a competitive advantage. Python is a powerful language, widely used in companies like Google and Amazon Web Services. Yet, it is the best place to start for younger learners who are new to programming because of its relative simplicity.

Course Outline

We understand that learning a new programming language without any knowledge or transitioning from Scratch to Python can be daunting to any child. With fun and engaging topics such as children’s movies, we introduce coding with real-world context to our students. For instance, our students create programs like a BMI calculator and health advisors, with instances that they can find relevance for in real life, making coding concepts easier to digest - and a lot more memorable!

Introduction to Python

Learn to install, set up and run Python.
Explore various data types (e.g. strings, floats and integers).

Various Data Types

Learn to use numerical data and mathematical operators.
Calculate the area of a square, triangle and circle.
Develop a BMI calculator.
Learn about string (text) data and string manipulation.

Making Decisions with Conditional Statements

Learn the syntax of if, if–else and if–elif–else statements.
Develop your own “Baymax” – your personal healthcare companion.

P206 Python Junior 2

Logical Operators and Truth Tables

Learn to use logical operators (and, or, not).
Develop a movie-age checker.

While Loops

Learn to use while loops.
Apply while loops to mathematical problems (e.g. finding prime numbers and the lowest common multiple).
Solve word problems using guess and check.

Using Modules and Libraries

Generate random numbers.

Hackathon and Challenges

Take on timed challenges to stretch your abilities.

What is your maximum class size?

Our classes have a maximum teacher-to-student ratio of 1:8. We keep our classes small so that every student benefits from personalised attention.

What do students need to bring to class?

We provide all equipment for the classes. Students just need to bring stationery, a water bottle and a jacket in case it gets cold.

What if a student misses a class? Is there a class replacement policy?

Unless the student is absent for medical reasons, please email specialprogrammes@thelearninglab.com.sg at least two weeks before the class they will miss so that arrangements for a replacement class can be made. Depending on the number of lesson hours missed, your child may attend replacement classes or have their registration transferred to the same course at another location or time slot. Replacement classes may be held online or in person at Coding Lab’s campuses (KAP Mall or Parkway Parade).

Are there any prerequisites for the coding classes?

Yes, the prerequisites differ for each programme. Please check them carefully before signing up.

What if a student has attended a coding class previously? Can he or she still attend your coding class?

For classes with prerequisites, the student may need to complete a placement test so that we can assess his or her foundational knowledge, as the curriculum offered by other providers may differ. We want to ensure that every student who comes to our class benefits and learns. Hence, it is vital that your child is enrolled in the right course to provide them with the right level of challenge.
