Programme Overview

The Learning Lab's Higher Ability Learners Workshop is designed to equip students with the skills and strategies needed to excel in English and Mathematics in preparation for the MOE selection test for higher-ability students.

Your child should be enrolled in this academic level in 2026.

Programme Focus

This programme focuses on developing critical thinking, creative problem-solving, and advanced language and mathematical abilities. Through targeted exercises, exposure to common question types seen in the selection test and step-by-step guidance, students will gain a deeper understanding of complex concepts and learn how to tackle challenging problems with confidence.

Course Outline

Having strong reading comprehension skills and a rich vocabulary helps English students stand out from the crowd. Primary 2 students will learn how to analyse comprehension and cloze passages that expose them to interesting stories and real-world topics, and be equipped with answering techniques. Challenging vocabulary questions and fun word puzzles will expand their vocabulary and hone their logical reasoning skills.

For Mathematics, Primary 2 students will be exposed to different types of non-routine problems which include familiar concepts such as arithmetic, patterns and measurement. The critical thinking questions aim to boost their higher-level logical thinking and reasoning skills. This programme is also aimed at challenging students to achieve their full potential by tackling topics which require a strong ability to visualise diagrams. They will be taught how to analyse questions of high complexity and apply creative problem-solving methods to achieve efficiency.

English Language Components and Skills
- Comprehension MCQ: specialist guidance on question analysis, close reading, clue-sourcing and answering techniques
- Vocabulary MCQ: exposure to a comprehensive range of vocabulary
- Cloze Passage: contextual analysis and answer precision techniques
- Critical Thinking: homographs, anagrams, analogies and word puzzles

Mathematics Topics
- Arithmetic: number sense and four operations
- Geometry: properties of polygons, shapes within shapes
- Measurement: gaps and intervals, mass, sets

Critical Thinking Components
- Number Patterns: number sequences, number puzzles
- Figure Patterns: rotational/symmetrical/inverted patterns
- Logic: relationship in pairs, matrix puzzles
- Spatial Sense: solid figures, nets, folding questions

For P2 Advanced Achievers Workshop (Dec) - English and Mathematics - students who are Primary 2 in 2026 are welcome to join this programme.

For P3 Advanced Achievers Workshop (Dec) - English and Mathematics - students who are Primary 3 in 2026 are welcome to join this programme.

Would you recommend my child taking it at this age?

We feel that exposure and practice is always useful for students. Students who would like to be stretched can get a taste of higher-ability questions that can challenge them.

If I cannot make it for some sessions of the programme, can I still sign up? Is the content covered related?

You can still attend the programme as each session is independent of each other. Should you miss any session, worksheets and answer keys will be provided.
