Programme Overview

Would you like your child to sound out letters and blend them effortlessly to form words? Would you like your child to develop the confidence and skills required to become an independent reader?

The Reading Workshop is a 12-week programme aimed at giving students a jumpstart to reading. Our systematic yet fun approach encourages children to want to learn even more words as they embark on their reading journey.

Children will not only have intensive practice in phonics and blending, but they will also be immersed in a fun learning environment with games, stories and books to borrow each week!

During each lesson, your child will learn how to decode words through blending and segmenting as well as learn how to read simple words and sentences. Your child will also get to practise sounding out beginning, middle and ending sounds.

Your child should be enrolled in these academic levels in 2026.

Programme Focus

Reading Workshop Level 1
- Decode words through blending and segmenting
- Read simple words and sentences
- Practise the beginning, middle and ending sounds of words

For students placed in Level 1
- On odd weeks, they will learn new letter sounds and sight words.
- On even weeks, they will revise their words learnt in a sentence. This helps to reinforce sentence construction and helps them understand its meaning.
- By the end of the workshop, they will have learnt 30 new sight words and 30 new decodable words.

Reading Workshop Level 2
- Master foundational phonic sounds and consonant blends
- Sound out digraphs and diphthongs
- Expand their vocabulary of sight words and multisyllabic words

For students placed in Level 2
- The first 2 lessons are a revision of word families, initial and final consonant blends, and identifying the number of syllables in words.
- Thereafter, they will learn 4-5 new sounds every two weeks, from sounds, digraphs, to trigraphs.
- In even weeks, they will revise these sounds within longer sentences and context.
- By the end of the workshop, they will have learnt 30 new sight words and 30 new decodable words.

Course Outline

The Reading Workshop is a 12-week programme aimed at giving students a jumpstart to reading. It will help your child become a more fluent and confident reader. We offer this programme at 2 levels.

In the first lesson, your child will be given a short assessment before being placed in a level that best matches their proficiency.

Level 1 is for children who need help to sound out letters and blend them effortlessly to form words. This way they will start recognising simple words and will be happily reading out simple sentences.

Level 2 is for children who strive to sound out multi-syllabic words and read more complex sentences confidently. This way they will start recognising a greater variety of words and will be more comfortable when reading their favourite books.

Our systematic yet fun approach encourages children to want to learn even more words as they embark on their reading journey. Children will not only have intensive practice in phonics and blending, but they will also be immersed in a fun learning environment with games, stories and books to borrow each week!

Course Highlights

Level 1:
- beginning and ending letter sounds (e.g. ‘S’, ‘A’, ‘LL’, ‘QU’)
- decodable words
- sight words

Level 2:
- consonant digraphs (e.g. ‘ch’, ‘sh’)
- long vowel sounds (e.g. ‘ai’, ‘ee’, ‘igh’)
- diphthongs and vowels ending with ‘r’ (e.g. ‘ar’, ‘or’, ‘ur’)
- decodable words

Which level will my child be placed in?

For students who have taken Reading Workshop Level 1, they will progress to Level 2. For other students, your child will be placed in a level that best matches their proficiency.

Will K2s and P1s be in the same class?

Yes, students will be grouped by proficiency, not by age. (i.e. K2s and P1s may be in the same class)

What is the difference between the Reading Workshop and core K2 or P1 programme?

Our core programme is only able to dedicate a limited amount of time to reading skills as reading is only 1 aspect of our lower primary core programme. We will still be covering other core skills like writing, listening and oral, sight words, spelling, introduction to grammar etc. All these components are spread out in the core programme over the year.

However, our Reading Workshop accelerates the rate at which students learn new sight words, reading skills etc within 12 weeks. In this workshop, students will develop reading skills at a faster pace. These skills will also help them cope in our core programme in terms of reading comprehension and cloze passages, new vocab words etc, because of the intensive practice.

Can I apply for a replacement class?

Students can arrange for 2 replacement classes within the 12 weeks.
